Fairway Hills News:
Sit-down with Golfers & CA on the Future of the Hobbit’s Glen Clubhouse

As you know, CA has begun working with The H. Chambers Company design firm on the renovation or replacement of the Hobbit's Glen Golf Course Clubhouse. We're still in the first phase, which includes space planning and programming. This is where we need help from you, our golfers.

Chambers is hosting a community meeting - specifically for golfers - on Monday, February 6, at 6:30pm at the Hobbit's Glen Clubhouse. There will be a brief presentation, followed by a conversation between Chambers and the golfing community to discuss what you, as avid golfers, would like to see at the clubhouse.

Golf operations will continue throughout the whole renovation or replacement process. If you have any questions, please call 410-730-5980.

Gas Line Easement Work at Hobbit's Glen

As part of work being done for the gas line easement by BGE at Hobbit's Glen, Mercier Tree Service will start clearing a 20' path directly over the gas line beginning this week. This involves limbing overhanging branches or complete removal if the entire tree is within the 20'. The gas line runs from the right side of Hole # 7 just before the downhill slope of the fairway all the way to the left of the Hole # 3 tee. Most of the trees that are adjacent to the gas line on the course will just be limbed. However there are a few large trees, two by the Hole # 6 tee and one by the Hole # 2 tee, that will need to be removed. This will not affect any trees integral to the course. We don't anticipate having to close any holes at this point, however it may be necessary to start at the back nine first. For more information, please call Hobbit's Glen at 410-730-5980.

Sections of Fairway Hills to be closed beginning December 1

On December 1, 2011 the Howard County Parallel Sewer contractor will begin with the initial steps in establishing the access road from Columbia Road along the golf cart path adjacent to the green at hole number 6 and also opening up the limit of disturbance across the fairway on the fifth hole to lay pipe. Please note that section of the golf course will be closed for the duration of the winter. The contractor is currently on schedule for completing the work in Fairway Hills Golf Club by March 31, 2012, weather permitting.

Club House Updates:

September 15th 2011 If you have not heard by now there is a new work team organized for the planning of the renovation/ new clubhouse. The team is comprised of CA management, Community residents, golfing members and one member of the CA Board of Directors. The goal is to bring together ideas from all involved in using the facility to build or rebuild a clubhouse that can be utilized by everyone including our future generations. The top 3 to 5 architectural "finalists" will be asked to give a presentation to the work team (presentation open to the public) as part of the final selection process. Once selected, the architect will interact with the work team for input and ideas. Stay tuned to our Website and bulletin board for updates on this project.

Course Condition Updates:

Fall is quickly approaching and with that comes the opportunity to improve the courses. We have already begun aerating and seeding areas that had thinned out from the brutal July we experienced. The beginning of # 2 fairway and all of the new Bermuda tees have also been overseeded. We began aerating and seeding the rough around fairways and greens on Monday, September 19. This will take about two weeks to complete as we work our way around the course. Expect to encounter some areas with cores on the surface, but you will be able to play through it without too much disruption to your game. The dam on #12 and pond edge is scheduled to be seeded once the rough has been completed. The tees and approaches are scheduled for aeration in the beginning of October. None of the operations listed will impact play too much. Please remember that these tasks are absolutely necessary to continue to improve the course.

Fairway Hills was severely flooded after the tropical storms passed through. Several bridges were damaged as the torrent of water swept through the course. Number six green was under four feet of water. A few bunkers were destroyed and a large portion of number twelve green was actually swept away. All areas have now been repaired. In fact, the course was only closed for two full days before opening up at least on a limited basis thanks to the hard work of Doug Bottamiller, Wade Shaw and the rest of the maintenance staff of Fairway Hills.
